From West Iceland and the remote Westfjords to the central highlands and Golden Circle.
The journey
Explore the varied landscapes of western and northern Iceland, travelling between coastal peninsulas, fjords, fishing villages and the open interior highlands. The route combines well-known destinations with quieter regions, including remote stretches of the Westfjords and the sparsely populated Strandir coast. A ferry crossing adds a different dimension to the journey, while the Kjolur route takes you across the central highlands between the north and south of the island. The trip ends in southwest Iceland, with time to explore the Golden Circle and Reykjavik.

What makes this journey
Day by day

The lava landscape of West Iceland is home to several lesser-known sights like the Grabrok crater and Glanni waterfall, just off road 1. A detour into the Borgarfjordur area will take you to the unique Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls and Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring. The village of Reykholt on the way is steeped in saga history with a medieval centre and the oldest hot spring in Iceland. Hikers must take the road into the Hvalfjordur fjord for the exhilarating hike along a canyon and through caves to the 198m-tall Glymur waterfall.
