The journey

Iceland's most iconic routes, at your own pace

This classic journey weaves together three of Iceland’s most diverse regions. Begin in West Iceland and Borgarfjordur, where lava fields, powerful hot springs and saga history set the scene. Explore the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in miniature,” crowned by its glacier-capped volcano, dramatic coastlines and Kirkjufell. Continue to the Golden Circle to walk between tectonic plates, watch geysers erupt and feel the force of Gullfoss waterfall. The adventure then follows the South Coast past legendary waterfalls, black sand beaches and vast glaciers, before ending in Reykjavik and the volcanic landscapes of Reykjanes.

1West Iceland & Borgarfjordur
West Iceland & Borgarfjordur

The lava landscape of West Iceland is home to several lesser-known sights like the Grabrok crater and Glanni waterfall, just off road 1. A detour into the Borgarfjordur area will take you to the unique Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls and Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring. The village of Reykholt on the way is steeped in saga history with a medieval centre and the oldest hot spring in Iceland. Hikers must take the road into the Hvalfjordur fjord for the exhilarating hike along a canyon and through caves to the 198m-tall Glymur waterfall.
