From Iceland's remote Arctic coast to colourful highlands and glacier landscapes.
The journey
Travel around Iceland on a route that combines the Ring Road with remote coastal regions, the Westfjords and the southern highlands. Start in West Iceland before heading north through the Troll Peninsula and along the Arctic Coast Way, where quiet villages, open coastlines and dramatic fjords give way to the volcanic landscapes of the northeast. Continue through the Eastfjords and along the South Coast, with time to explore glaciers, islands and highlands along the way. The journey then returns to southwest Iceland through the Golden Circle before ending in Reykjavik, combining Iceland's better-known sights with remote regions and less-travelled roads.

What makes this journey
Day by day

The lava landscape of West Iceland is home to several lesser-known sights like the Grabrok crater and Glanni waterfall, just off road 1. A detour into the Borgarfjordur area will take you to the unique Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls and Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring. The village of Reykholt on the way is steeped in saga history with a medieval centre and the oldest hot spring in Iceland. Hikers must take the road into the Hvalfjordur fjord for the exhilarating hike along a canyon and through caves to the 198m-tall Glymur waterfall.
