From quiet northern coastlines and remote fjords to glaciers, waterfalls and Reykjavik.
The journey
Explore Iceland beyond the main routes, travelling from West Iceland through the remote north and east before returning along the South Coast. Discover the waterfalls and lava landscapes of Borgarfjordur and Snaefellsnes, then continue through the lesser-visited North West and Troll Peninsula to Akureyri. Follow the Arctic Coast Way past whale-watching waters, secluded villages, sea cliffs and bird-rich peninsulas before reaching the dramatic Eastfjords. Head south through towering mountains and fishing villages to Vatnajokull glacier, icebergs and the black-sand beaches of the South Coast. Finish with the Golden Circle and Reykjavik, combining remote landscapes with Iceland's best-known sights.
The route
What makes this journey
Day by day

The lava landscape of West Iceland is home to several lesser-known sights like the Grabrok crater and Glanni waterfall, just off road 1. A detour into the Borgarfjordur area will take you to the unique Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls and Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring. The village of Reykholt on the way is steeped in saga history with a medieval centre and the oldest hot spring in Iceland. Hikers must take the road into the Hvalfjordur fjord for the exhilarating hike along a canyon and through caves to the 198m-tall Glymur waterfall.
