Explore Iceland from its lesser-visited northern coast to the volcanic highlands and dramatic South. Begin in West Iceland and travel through the North, following the Troll Peninsula and remote Arctic Coast Way to the far northeast, with volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, fishing villages and rich birdlife along the way. Continue through the spectacular Eastfjords before reaching the glaciers and lagoons of Southeast Iceland. Discover the Westman Islands and the famous waterfalls and black-sand beaches of the South Coast, then venture inland to the colourful mountains and hot springs of Landmannalaugar. Finish with the Golden Circle and Reykjavik, combining remote landscapes with Iceland's classic highlights.

The itinerary in detail
The lava landscape of West Iceland is home to several lesser-known sights like the Grabrok crater and Glanni waterfall, just off road 1. A detour into the Borgarfjordur area will take you to the unique Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls and Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring. The village of Reykholt on the way is steeped in saga history with a medieval centre and the oldest hot spring in Iceland. Hikers must take the road into the Hvalfjordur fjord for the exhilarating hike along a canyon and through caves to the 198m-tall Glymur waterfall.
