1The Hveragerdi Area
The Hveragerdi Area

Hveragerdi is known as Iceland’s, and one of the world’s, capitals of hot springs (“hver” means hot spring). The region, part of the Hengill volcano, is highly geothermally active, and numerous mostly minor earthquakes are recorded here each year. The village is also famous for its greenhouses, which are heated with hot water from the volcanic springs, as well as for the nearby Reykjadalur Valley.
